Hazardous Chemicals: In YOUR environment?

As a longtime expert in hazardous materials, it has recently come to my attention that in both the U.S. and EU, there have been numerous reports of fires, explosions, implosions, and toxic exposures to many chemicals.From a litigation view, such events/incidents are often termed “accidents”. However, there is always “fault” (who/what was responsible…). Questions to be answered involve a deep inquiry into the origin and cause. Often, required hazard warnings are missing. Labels must be present on the chemical containers alerting the laypeople involved, as well as reminding the knowledgeable people involved, as to the toxicity: both acute and chronic, of the chemicals. Important to watch out for is what not to do, like mixing them with selected others where chemical reactions will foreseeably occur.
Yet, human (and animal exposure) to some of the more toxic types seem to be spreading. News reports recently from a Washington implosion and a California leak have put a spotlight on chemical safety failures.Two fatalities had been confirmed after the tank containing "white liquor" – a chemical solution of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide, used in making paper pulp – imploded (to collapse or burst inward) at a Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility on 2 June 2026.
The ruptured tank contained about 900,000 gallons (3.4 million litres) of white liquor, and tests confirmed that contamination entered the nearby Columbia River, (officials have said), although no "negative health impacts" had been detected on air quality or the city of Longview's drinking water. The search for the missing carried on through the week as recovery crews worked through debris in indoor areas and flew drones over the perimeter of the site, as reported by Kurt Stitch: Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue's deputy chief.
There have been other recent incidents too. Such as the deadly chemical disaster which occurred on 22 April 2026 at the Ames Goldsmith Catalyst Refiners plant in Institute, West Virginia, USA. It is reported that an undesirable mixture of nitric acid with a currently unknown chemical produced toxic hydrogen sulfide gas killing two workers and injuring more than 30 others.
Then, in late May, a chemical tank containing 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate – a toxic, flammable chemical used to make acrylic plastics – triggered a massive emergency at the GKN Aerospace plant in Garden Grove, California. A cooling valve failure caused the chemical to dangerously overheat, bringing it to the brink of a catastrophic explosion, forcing the evacuation of 50,000 residents and bringing the public concerns of storing chemicals near populated areas back into focus.
In the United States, proposed cuts to chemical safety oversight would move policy in the wrong direction. The Administration’s FY 2026 budget request would reduce OSHA funding from about $632.3 million in FY 2025 to roughly $582.4 million – a cut of about 7.9% – while reducing staffing by 223 full-time positions, from 1,810 to 1,587. The same proposal would eliminate the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (USCSB), an agency that has responded to more than 170 chemical incidents and issued nearly 1,000 safety recommendations over its history. Meanwhile, OSHA reported 34,625 inspections in FY 2024, underscoring the already heavy oversight burden across high-hazard workplaces. At a time of repeated industrial incidents, the case is not for weaker oversight, but for stronger enforcement and prevention.
Chemical safety is imperative
Chemical safety reaches far beyond industrial plants. It affects personal care products, cosmetics, household cleaners, manufacturing processes, medicines, and food systems. Chemical releases can compromise the air we breathe, the soil beneath us, the water we drink, and the food we consume. When chemical safety fails, the consequences may be immediate – through fire, explosion, or toxic exposure – or they may develop slowly over time through chronic contact with hazardous substances in homes, workplaces, and the broader environment. That is why chemical safety is not merely a technical or regulatory issue; it is a matter of public health, environmental protection, and community trust.
Hazardous chemicals exist, but their risks can be managed when they are properly stored, handled, labeled, monitored, and understood by those who use or live near them. In an era of instantly accessible information, public awareness and professional vigilance are essential, and manufacturers, regulators, employers, and consumers all share responsibility for reducing preventable harm.

What would it take to raise chemical safety to the next level?
Evaluate:inspect equipment conditions more frequently
Investigate: expand structural safety of chemical containers
Upgrade:corrosion evaluation of metal tanks
Prepare: due diligence and planning for foreseeable emergency leak events
Verify:residual chemical probabilities (prior to cleaning)
Conduct:pre-job hazard analyses
We need a more disciplined approach to identifying and controlling chemical risk near where we live and work; in our medicines, our foods, our cosmetics and especially industrial centres nearby. Legislation exists; yes. The law is one thing and what is done is another (to quote from the popular Outlander television series.) Layman we are, most of us. The educated few know, or should know, or, in hindsight “should have known” (legal view) the identity of the hard-to-speak, hard-to-understand both chronic and acute hazards of “chemicals”.
Be aware of the safety data sheets (also known as SDS and MSDS)
All chemicals are required by federal legislation to provide a document describing what the chemical can do to you if you are exposed to it short and long term. It has the potential to hurt via breathing it in, getting it on you, having it contaminate the earth you stand on.
