  • May 20, 2022 – China recorded 193 new confirmed cases, of which 17 were imported (9 in Fujian, 2 in Shanghai, 2 in Jiangsu, 2 in Guangxi, 1 in Beijing, and 1 in Yunnan) and 176 domestically transmitted cases (88 in Shanghai, 50 in Beijing, 8 in Tianjin, 4 in Henan, 3 in Guangdong, 2 in Jilin, and 1 in Liaoning). No new deaths were recorded. There were 990 new asymptomatic infections, of which 51 were imported and 939 were locally transmitted (770 in Shanghai, 102 in Sichuan, 24 in Henan, 12 in Beijing, 11 in Tianjin, 9 in Jilin, 6 in Anhui, 2 in Liaoning, 1 in Zhejiang, 1 in Jiangxi, and 1 in Hubei). There were 43,766 asymptomatic cases still under medical observation (of which 419 were locally transmitted).

  • Shanghai to open “green channel” to facilitate import of key goods. At a routine press briefing on May 18, Deputy Director of Shanghai Customs Liu Bo said that Shanghai would open a “green channel” for the city’s key industries, including integrated circuits, biopharmaceuticals, and car manufacturing. The green channel will aim to expand facilitation measures to entire industrial and supply chains. Goods that are eligible for the green channel range from finished products to commodities and raw materials and related equipment. The facilitation measures include sped up quarantine procedures for coronavirus vaccines, medicines, and other products for fighting the pandemic and facilitated customs clearance measures for “whitelisted” companies, such as automakers Tesla and SAIC.

  • China relaxes travel requirements for U.S. travelers. According to a notice published on the website of the Chinese Embassy in the U.S., China has loosened requirements for travel from the U.S. to China. The notice removes the requirements for passengers to undergo 7 days of COVID-19 testing, conduct self-monitoring, and take anti-body tests prior to boarding the flight. Crew members will also no longer be required to undergo additional quarantine and can travel to China as normal passengers. Passengers will still be required to take two COVID-19 tests from two different testing centers within 48 hours of boarding the flight, regardless of whether they have been inoculated and which vaccine they have been inoculated with. These requirements were first imposed in January 2022 to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant.

  • China’s immigration authorities says they will restrict Chinese nationals from leaving and entering the country. In an article posted on its official WeChat account, the National Immigration Administration (NIA) said that it is “necessary to implement a strict entry-exit policy”, restrict Chinese citizens from non-essential travel abroad, and implement stricter approval procedures for the issuance of passports. It also stated that it would implement stricter measures at entry and exit ports to prevent illegal border crossings in an effort to curb the spread of the virus.

  • Beijing’s Chaoyang district issues work-from-home order. Beijing’s Chaoyang district, the most populous in the city, ordered all residents, who are able to, to work from home from Thursday, May 5 onwards. Those who must go to work on-site are urged to use their own means of travel rather than taking public transport to reduce the risk of transmission. Epidemic control and prevention measures that were implemented over the Labor Day holiday have also been temporarily extended. These include the suspension of performance venues, entertainment venues, Internet cafes, and indoor sports facilities, as well as scenic areas and public cultural venues. Parks will also continue to be required to limit capacity to 50 percent and restaurants will continue to suspend dine-in services. Public transportation in the districts of Chaoyang, Haidian, Fangshan, and Tongzhou has been adjusted and more than 60 Beijing Subway entrances and exits across 13 lines have been closed.

  • Beijing temporarily closes gyms, entertainment and live performance venues, internet cafes, and indoor sports facilities: On April 29, 2022, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism issued a notice on epidemic prevention and control in cultural and tourist sites during the 2022 May Day holiday, which required that: (1) Scenic spots, libraries, cultural centers, and other cultural and tourist sites in the city should implement “limited quantity, reservation, and peak time adjustment” requirements and make requiring reservations a standard practice. Visitors will also be requirement to take their temperature, scan and test their health code, and present a negative nucleic acid test certificate taken within the last 48 hours when entering a site. (2) Visitors must also check their temperature, scan and test their health code, and present a negative nucleic acid test certificate taken within the last 48 hours when checking into hotels and rural B&Bs in the city; (3) Performance venues, entertainment venues, and Internet service venues will continue to be closed throughout the city. The city will continue to suspend off-campus training activities of cultural and art training institutions and group tours.

  • Beijing orders school closures. At a news conference on April 28, Beijing’s education committee announced that all primary and secondary schools, kindergartens, and secondary vocational schools are required to end classes one day early on Friday 29 ahead of the May Day national holiday, which will take place from April 30 to May 4. The education committee did specify when schools would be able to reopen after the holiday, saying only that return to school will be determined “according to the epidemic situation” and that students, teachers, and employees will be required to have a negative COVID-19 test from the last 48 hours to be allowed back. The announcement comes as Beijing recorded 47 new locally transmitted symptomatic cases and 2 asymptomatic infections on Thursday, and outbreaks had been discovered in local schools earlier in the week.

  • May 19, 2022 – China recorded 212 new confirmed cases, of which 21 were imported (7 in Fujian, 7 in Sichuan, 2 in Guangdong, 2 in Yunnan, 1 in Tianjin, 1 in Shanghai, and 1 in Zhejiang) and 191 we domestically transmitted (82 in Shanghai, 50 in Beijing, 34 in Sichuan, 11 in Henan, 7 in Tianjin, 6 in Jilin, and 1 in Guangdong). 1 new death was recorded, a locally transmitted case in Shanghai. There were 870 new asymptomatic infections, of which 45 were imported and 825 were locally transmitted (637 in Shanghai, 115 in Sichuan, 26 in Tianjin, 15 in Jilin, 12 in Anhui, 9 in Henan, 5 in Beijing, 3 in Liaoning, 2 in Jiangsu, and 1 in Guangdong). There were 45,519 asymptomatic infections still under medical observation, of which 419 were imported.

  • May 18, 2022 – China recorded 240 new confirmed cases, including 13 imported cases (9 in Fujian, 2 in Guangdong, 1 in Shanghai, and 1 in Guangxi) and 227 locally transmitted cases (96 in Shanghai, 52 in Beijing, 49 in Sichuan, 16 in Tianjin, 9 in Jilin, 3 in Henan, 1 in Jiangsu, and 1 in Qinghai). 3 new deaths were recorded, all of which were locally transmitted cases in Shanghai. There were 1,065 new asymptomatic infections, of which 65 were imported and 1,000 were locally transmitted (759 in Shanghai, 152 in Sichuan, 39 in Tianjin, 17 in Beijing, 15 in Anhui, 8 in Henan, 3 in Jilin, 3 in Jiangsu, 1 in Liaoning, 1 in Zhejiang, 1 in Hubei, and 1 in Guangdong). There were 47,718 asymptomatic infections still under medical observation (of which 441 were imported).

  • May 17, 2022 – China recorded 175 new confirmed cases, including 13 imported cases (9 in Fujian, 2 in Guangdong, and 2 in Yunnan) and 162 locally transmitted cases (77 in Shanghai, 43 in Beijing, 16 in Sichuan, 11 in Henan, 7 in Tianjin, 5 in Jilin, 1 in Jiangsu, 1 in Fujian, and 1 in Shandong). 1 new death was recorded, a locally transmitted case in Shanghai. There were 925 new asymptomatic infections, of which 38 were imported and 887 were locally transmitted (746 in Shanghai, 73 in Sichuan, 23 in Tianjin, 22 in Henan, 9 in Beijing, 6 in Jilin, 3 in Qinghai, 2 in Hebei, 1 in Jiangsu, 1 in Zhejiang, and 1 in Anhui). There were 50,461 asymptomatic infections still under medical observation (of which 452 were imported).

  • May 16, 2022 – China recorded 151 new confirmed cases, including 11 imported cases (7 in Fujian, 2 in Guangdong, 1 in Shanghai, and 1 in Yunnan) and 140 locally transmitted cases (69 in Shanghai, 39 in Beijing, 14 in Sichuan, 8 in Henan, 5 in Guangdong, 2 in Zhejiang, 1 in Liaoning, 1 in Jiangsu, and 1 in Guizhou). 4 new deaths were recorded, all of which were locally transmitted in Shanghai. There were 1,076 new asymptomatic infections, of which 57 were imported and 1,019 were locally transmitted (869 in Shanghai, 74 in Sichuan, 15 in Beijing, 13 in Henan, 10 in Liaoning, 8 in Anhui, 7 in Qinghai, 4 in Tianjin, 4 in Hebei, 4 in Hubei, 3 in Jilin, 2 in Heilongjiang, 2 in Guangdong, 1 in Jiangsu, 1 in Guangxi, 1 in Guizhou, and 1 in Yunnan).   • May 15, 2022 – China recorded 239 new confirmed cases, of which 13 were imported (7 in Fujian, 2 in Shanghai, 2 in Yunnan, 1 in Guangdong, and 1 in Sichuan) and 226 were locally transmitted (166 in Shanghai, 33 in Beijing, 13 in Sichuan, 5 in Henan, 2 in Liaoning, 2 in Guizhou, 1 in Hebi, 1 in Jilin, 1 in Guangdong, 1 in Jiangxi, and 1 in Chongqing). 3 new deaths were recorded, all of which were locally transmitted in Shanghai.   • May 14, 2022 – China recorded 276 new confirmed cases, of which 23 were imported (17 in Fujian, 4 in Guangdong, 1 in Shanghai, and 1 in Guangxi) and 253 locally transmitted cases (194 in Shanghai, 32 in Beijing, 7 in Henan, 4 in Guangdong, 4 in Qinghai, 3 in Sichuan, 2 in Liaoning, 2 in Chongqing, 1 in Jilin, 1 in Fujian, 1 in Shandong, 1 in Hunan, and 1 in Guangxi). 1 new death was recorded, a locally transmitted case in Shanghai.   • May 13, 2022 –  China recorded 331 new confirmed cases, of which 19 were imported (15 cases in Fujian, 2 cases in Guangxi, 1 case in Beijing, and 1 case in Guangdong) and 312 were locally transmitted (227 cases in Shanghai, 42 in Beijing, 15 in Henan, 11 in Guangdong, 8 in Qinghai, 6 in Sichuan, 2 in Chongqing, and 1 in Shaanxi). 2 new deaths were recorded, all of which were locally transmitted in Shanghai.   • May 12, 2022 – China recorded 237 new confirmed cases, of which 15 were imported (5 cases in Guangxi, 4 cases in Fujian, 4 cases in Yunnan, and 2 cases in Guangdong) and 222 were domestically transmitted (144 cases in Shanghai, 35 in Beijing, 21 in Henan, 13 in Qinghai, 3 in Jilin, 3 in Guangdong, 2 in Liaoning, and 1 in Guizhou). 5 new deaths were recorded, all of which were locally transmitted in Shanghai.   • May 11, 2022 – China recorded 324 new confirmed cases, of which 22 were imported (11 cases in Fujian, 3 cases in Guangxi, 2 cases in Guangdong, 1 case in Beijing, 1 case in Liaoning, 1 case in Shanghai, 1 case in Jiangsu, 1 case in Sichuan, and 1 case in Yunnan) and 302 were domestically transmitted (228 cases in Shanghai, 24 in Beijing, 22 in Henan, 10 in Guangdong, 10 in Qinghai, 4 in Liaoning, 2 in Zhejiang, and 2 in Fujian). 7 new deaths were recorded, all of which were domestically transmitted in Shanghai.   • May 9, 2022 – China reported 415 new confirmed cases, of which 14 were imported (7 in Guangdong, 4 in Fujian, 2 in Shanghai, and 1 in Guangxi) and 401 were domestically transmitted (322 cases in Shanghai, 33 cases in Beijing, 28 cases in Guangdong, 14 cases in Henan, 2 cases in Qinghai, 1 case in Zhejiang, and 1 case in Hunan). 11 new deaths were recorded, all of which were domestically transmitted in Shanghai.
