Also, children aged 12-17 from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan can be registered for vaccination starting from 20:00, September 1, 2021, too. • On August 26, 2021, Nanjing Lukou Airport, where the recent Delta outbreak first started, resumed domestic airlines with the cluster being under control. At 10:15 am, flight MU2923 from Nanjing Lukou Airport to Qingdao Jiaodong Airport took off. It was the first passenger flight to take off from Nanjing Lukou Airport since all flights were suspended due to the epidemic on July 23, 2021. The other means of transportation including road, railway, and metro are also gradually restored as of August 26.

• In a recent speech, Zhong Nanshan, China’s top epidemiologist and government advisor, said that China’s inoculation rate can possibly reach 80 percent by the end of 2021. This means herd immunity can be expected in China by the end of the year. Zhong said that with China’s current 70 percent vaccine efficacy, the country requires an 83.3 percent vaccination rate to build herd immunity. With vaccine efficacy at 80 percent, China would only need a 72.9 percent vaccination rate.

• It’s reported that the Meishan Terminal of the Ningbo port has partially resumed berthing operations since August 18, 2021. The terminal’s full activity is expected to restore in one or two weeks. Previously, on August 11, the Meishan terminal, which accounts for a quarter of the Ningbo port’s container throughput, was shut down after a worker tested positive for COVID-19. Ningbo port is the world’s third busiest container port, the partial closure of which worsened the congestion at other major Chinese gateways.

• China’s latest COVID-19 outbreaks have eased after local cases were outnumbered by imported cases six days in a row. In the past two days, China only reported 6 domestically transmitted cases respectively, the lowest in about a month. The numbers of medium-risk areas and high-risk areas are declining as well, with 29 high-risk areas and 91 medium-risk areas recorded as of 15:00, August 17, 2021.

• China is still strictly adhering to its zero-tolerance approach in combating the COVID-19 pandemic. Strict quarantine and mass testing are applied whenever there is an outbreak. Most recently, Ningbo partly shut the world’s third busiest container port after a worker tested positive with COVID-19. Analysts are worrying that China’s economic growth will get dragged down as a result of the strict anti-pandemic control measures. However, China’s vaccination rate has been far less than the targeted rate to achieve herd immunity: China needs an 83 percent vaccination rate to reach herd immunity — currently only 50 percent of the population has been fully vaccinated. It seems that China won’t give up the zero-tolerance approach anytime soon, at least not in 2021.

Of the 48 cities affected, 36 cities have reported no new infections for more than five days. Except for Yangzhou, Wuhan, and Zhangjiajie, only sporadic cases have been reported in other cities. From this point of view, NHC regards that the national epidemic risk is generally under control, and the risk of a large-scale epidemic at the national level is relatively small.

• August 13, 2021 – China reported 99 new confirmed cases, including 52 imported cases (17 cases in Henan, 9 cases in Guangdong, 9 cases in Yunan, 7 cases in Guangxi, 5 cases in Shanghai, 2 cases in Sichuan, 1 case in Liaoning, 1 case in Shandong, and 1 case in Shaanxi) and 47 local cases (26 cases in Jiangsu, 14 cases in Henan, 4 cases in Hubei, 2 cases in Hunan, 1 case in Yunnan); no new deaths; 1 new suspected case (local case in Henan). The country recorded 34 new asymptomatic infections, including 29 imported cases and 5 local cases (3 cases in Hubei and 2 cases in Henan); 499 cases of asymptomatic infection are still under medical observation (391 imported from abroad).

• Total vaccine doses administered: 1.833 billion (as of August 12, 2021).

• As of 18:00, August 12, 2021, China recorded 27 high-risk areas (10 areas in Jiangsu, 13 areas in Henan, 3 areas in Hunan, and 1 area in Yunnan) and 136 medium-risk areas (47 areas in Jiangsu, 39 areas in Henan, 25 areas in Hunan, 8 areas in Hubei,  5 areas in Yunnan, 3 areas in Shandong, 2 areas in Beijing, 2 areas in Fujian, 2 areas in Hainan, 1 area in Sichuan,1 area in Inner Mongolia, and 1 area in Shanghai).

• Shanghai will start COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 12 to 17 gradually. Starting from August 12, children aged 15-17 can be registered for vaccination. The guardian can register and make an appointment online through the “Health Cloud” APP. After the successful appointment, the child can go to the scheduled vaccination site for vaccination accompanied by the guardian. Registration and vaccination appointment information for children aged 12-14 years is yet to be notified.

• August 12, 2021 – China reported 81 new confirmed cases, including 20 imported cases (5 cases in Shanghai, 5 cases in Guangdong, 5 cases in Yunnan, 3 cases in Guangxi, 1 case in Fujian, and 1 case in Sichuan) and 61 local cases (38 cases in Jiangsu, 10 cases in Hubei, 7 cases in Hunan, 3 cases in Henan, and 3 cases in Yunnan); no new deaths; 2 new suspected cases (imported from abroad in Shanghai). The country recorded 38 new asymptomatic infections, including 27 imported cases and 11 local cases (11 cases in Hubei and 1 case in Zhejiang); 511 cases of asymptomatic infection are still under medical observation (395 imported from abroad).

• Total vaccine doses administered: 1.820 billion (as of August 11, 2021).

• As of 15:00, August 11, 2021, China recorded 20 high-risk areas (3 areas in Jiangsu, 13 areas in Henan, 3 areas in Hunan, and 1 area in Yunnan) and 207 medium-risk areas (117 areas in Jiangsu, 39 areas in Henan, 25 areas in Hunan, 8 areas in Hubei,  4 areas in Yunnan,3 areas in Sichuan, 3 areas in Shandong, 2 areas in Beijing, 2 areas in Fujian, 2 areas in Hainan, 1 area in Inner Mongolia, and 1 area in Shanghai).

• According to a statement released by China’s National Health Commission, China has administered more than 1.8  billion COVID-19 vaccine doses.
