Google Acquires Cloud Commerce Startup Orbitera

Not even Google can deny that multi-cloud is the future. To that end, Alphabet has acquired cloud commerce startup Orbitera on Monday, a platform that makes it easy for businesses to buy and sell software from multiple vendors in the cloud.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but TechCrunch reports that the transaction was in the range of $100 million.

The Orbitera Cloud Commerce Platform helps software vendors, service providers, system integrators and channel organizations sell and distribute cloud solutions and services. Its platform supports AWS, Microsoft Azure, and had planned to add support for Rackspace and CenturyLink prior to being acquired by Google.

According to a blog post by Google Head of Global Technology Partners Nan Boden, “We recognize that both enterprise customers and ISVs want to be able to use more than one cloud provider and have a way to conduct product trials and proofs of concept before building a full production deployment, all using their trusted SIs (System Integrators), resellers and normal sales cycles.”

Google says that Orbitera will continue to operate as-is though it will offer Orbitera’s technology to its Google customer base.

Orbitera’s CEO Marcin Kurc worked at AWS prior to launching the West Hollywood-based company in 2011. Its relationship with AWS should prove interesting for the future roadmap of the company.
